Around the world, women still struggle for equality in basic matters like access to education, equal pay and the right to vote. But how to enlist everyone, men and women, as allies for change? In this TED talk, Elizabeth Nyamayaro, Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women and head of UN Women’s blockbuster HeForShe initiative, discusses her own personal experiences and how they relate to the HeForShe project, which invites men and boys from around the world to stand in solidarity with each other and with women, to create a shared vision for gender equality.
The initiative was an immediate success. In just three days, more than 100,000 men had signed up and committed to be agents of change for equality, including men from every single country on Earth. Within that same week, HeForShe created more than 1.2 billion conversations on social media, as well as real-life impacts inspired by the initiative. Nyamayaro recounts examples, such as the Zimbabwean man who created a “husband school”, and a youth advocate in India who organised an innovative bicycle rally to share the HeForShe message.
